Yajima Kajiko and the formation of the Japan Woman's Christian Temperance Union

About the Women`s Christan Temperance Union (WCTU)

The emergence of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union in Japan marked one of the first waves of a large participation of middle-class women in Japan, advocating for temperance and the abolition of prostitution. As a mission of alleviating women’s suffrage and a wish for Japanese society to move towards Christian ideals of womanhood, which stem in the Women’s Christian Temperance Movement coming from the United States, their views are often criticized as being an one-sided advocacy for women. This site gives an overview about the origins of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in Japan, its first president Yajima Kajiko and the motives which drove the Union`s activism. Furthermore it shows in which ways and to what extend the organization influenced the emancipation of women in Japan, positively or negatively.
